Hi there! We collected some odd bits of information during our train trip yesterday. For instance, the house to the right is about 20 miles from Williams (the closest town to the South Rim). they do have electricity but they do not have water. They have to go to Williams and buy water, then haul it back. The water costs .08 cents if you get the water yourself and .12 cents if you have it delivered. Multiply that by the gallons used on your water bill and think about it! There are some houses out there that are "completely off the grid" meaning they don't have water or electricity. Some of them have solar panels and some don't. Lots of cowboys.
There is no water between Williams and the South Rim, and the well at Williams is 5,000 deep. The water for the South Rim is piped from the North Rim.
Williams is a very interesting city. Route 66 goes through the town and it is the last city to be bypassed by the freeway. It was used as the prototype for the movie CARS and some of the buildings are familiar from the movie.
Williams has some great antique shops, lots of quilting and some very good local cafes.
We learned that 16 train cars is 1/4 mile. Maybe that math problem from a few days ago can be solved now.
We also learned that it takes 150 acres to support "one pair" of cattle -- that's a cow and her calf. No wonder the ranches are so big and we see the cows so far apart!
There are lots and lots of friendly people out here. No city bustle. Almost everybody is willing to stop and talk, offer information, etc.
